Special Class

The Special Class

Members: Beak, Basilisk, Dummy, Ernst, Martha Johansson, Angel Salvadore

Beak was assigned to the Xavier Institute's Special Class, which was taught by Xorn and composed of students with equally strange mutations. With the Special Class, Beak was finally able to find friends and acceptance. During a camping trip, they encountered a contingent of U-Men and were able to subdue one by working together. When Xorn revealed himself to be Magneto, the Special Class became his new Brotherhood. But when Magneto's actions proved too extreme, Beak (and later Angel and Ernst) turned against him. Basilisk was accidentally killed by Magneto when the younger mutant made an inappropriately timed fart joke.

Among the Special Class, the clownish Basilisk enjoyed teasing Beak, though they seemed to get along for the most part. Dummy, being a sentient gas, rarely spoke. Beak saved his life during the U-Men attack; nevertheless, he ended up dying in Beak's arms when his suit got ripped in two during the Omega Gang's riot. Ernst was shy and withdrawn, usually relying on her classmates for leadership. In Here Comes Tomorrow, it was revealed that she was in fact a reformed Cassandra Nova. She became an X-Man and was allies with Beak's descendant, Tito.

Stepford Cuckoos

The Stepford Cuckoos

Members: Esme, Sophie, Phoebe, Celeste and Mindee Cuckoo

The telepathic collective known as the Stepford Cuckoos teamed up with Beak and Angel during the Shi'ar Imperial Guard's assault on the Institute. Together, they aided the X-Men against Cassandra Nova. Later on, Sophie died during the Omega Gang's riot in the school. When Xorn revealed himself to be Magneto and went on a rampage in New York City, Phoebe, Celeste and Mindee became part of an underground resistance against him. Beak later joined them and provided key information about Magneto's plans and fortress. Esme, who had joined Magneto's Brotherhood, was killed by him in anger. The rest of the Cuckoos returned to the Xavier Institute after Magneto's defeat.

Xavier Institute Staff

The Xavier Institute Staff

Prominent Members: Beast, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Jean Grey, Professor X, Wolverine, Xorn

The X-Men played a large part in shaping the course of Beak's life. Among the teaching staff, Beak was closest to Beast. Beast took a special interest in him, sympathizing with his feelings of loneliness and isolation over his freakish appearance. Beak was so grateful to Beast that he decided to entrust his teacher with his prize titanium bat. Archangel was another teacher who likewise encouraged Beak to try flying, while Professor X rewarded Beak for his heroism during the U-Men attack on the school. He also later told Beak that he was one of the Institute's most valued students.

But perhaps the teacher who influenced Beak the most was Xorn, who was placed in charge of the Special Class. Under his gentle and compassionate guidance, Beak became more extroverted and was able to make friends. Even when Xorn turned out to be a disguise for the villainous Magneto, Beak still felt the influence of his pacifist Xorn persona. He took Xorn's iron helmet with him, hoping some of his old teacher's "cool" would rub off on him. When Beak was recruited into the Exiles, Xorn's helmet and his titanium baseball bat were the only two mementos of his old life that he was able to take with him.

Exiles

The Exiles

Members: Beak, Blink, Mimic, Morph, Namora, Sabretooth, Sasquatch

Shortly after Magneto's defeat in New Genosha, Beak was unhinged from his reality by the Timebroker and recruited into the dimension-hopping team called the Exiles. Because of his inexperience and lack of offensive powers, his teammates would often have to protect him during their missions. Nevertheless, Beak occasionally proved his usefulness, usually by raising a point of view or proposing a line of thinking that was different from what the more seasoned Exiles were used to.

Among his teammates, Sasquatch had been shown to be especially protective of him. She was initially against bringing Beak into the Exiles, because she felt it was too harsh a life for a teenager. Mimic, on the other hand, acted as a mentor and big brother to Beak. And of course Morph, as the team's resident goofball, often cracked jokes at his expense.

Hyperions

Hyperions

When an evil version of the immensely powerful Hyperion began wreaking havoc on Panoptichron and threatening the multiverse, it fell to Beak to find a way to defeat him. His solution was to recruit two good versions of Hyperion to battle the evil one. The plan worked, and the two Hyperions decided to assume control of Panoptichron to keep its technology from being misused. Blink assured them that there was no one more qualified than the Exiles to guard the crystal palace. The Hyperions, however, would only trust was Beak, since without him their realities would have been at the mercy of the evil Hyperion. Beak vouched for the Exiles, and the Hyperions returned to their realities, secure in the knowledge that "at least one true hero" was looking after Panoptichron.

New Warriors

The New Warriors

Members: Blackwing, Decibel, Longstrike, Night Thrasher, Phaser, Renascence, Ripcord, Skybolt, Tempest, Wondra
Support Team: Aja, Grace, Kaz

When Superhuman Reigstration became law, a man calling himself Night Thrasher reformed the New Warriors. Among his recruits were Barnell, Angel, Jubilee, Jono Starsmore and three of the surviving members of the Omega Gang. Together, the New Warriors fought against superpowered criminals and terrorists, all the while trying to avoid capture by the government for their unregistered superhero activities.

Aside from Angel, Barnell was probably closest to his teammate Skybolt. Despite Skybolt's past as a member of the Omega Gang, the two became good friends, sharing conspiracy theories and playing video games together. Barnell was also close to Renascence (Sofia Mantega), who he had been classmates with at the Xavier Institute. Though Night Thrasher was never close to any of his recruits, Barnell still felt grateful to him for giving him a chance to become a hero. Barnell sometimes came into conflict with Jubilee, because the latter distrusted Night Thrasher. However, he still clearly had a great deal of respect for her.
